6Meet Dan Benham.  Dan loves snow.  Dan loves the cold.  Dan loves Water Joe.  This guy is daring, competitive, passionate and really good at what he does. Read on!

What is a funny story about you?

About a year ago I had a pretty gnarly mullet.  My whole family hated it, besides me of course.  So, we made a bet.  The bet was that if I didn’t get on the podium I had to cut the mullet.  Sure enough I pulled the holeshot and was leading the race. It should have been an easy win but I made a mistake and my sled caught an edge and flipped, end over end, 3-4 times.  I wasn’t able to finish the race and had to cut the mullet.  It wasn’t funny at the time but is now!

What is your spirit animal?

Some days I’m a friendly Panda Bear but I gotta say, most of the time I’m a Jaguar.

Tell us about your family?

I have two wonderful parents and two older sisters.  My parents have been together since high school and sometimes I think they have TOO much fun.  Together, they run the family electrical business.

If you could have one magical power what would it be?

I wish I was invincible.  I would love to be in perfect health all the time.

What future aspirations do you have?

I want to be a multiple time Pro Open champion.  I hope to have a successful snocross career and then retire.

Who is an inspirational person in your life right now?Photo 2

My father.  I see how hard he works to provide for his family, giving us all the opportunities we could ever dream of.  What I’ve learned from him is that I have no excuse for being anything less than successful.

We all know how important nutrition is, what is one thing you can’t live without?

I can’t live without ice cream.  It’s a weakness I will always have.  Fortunately there are healthier options available.

How do you Joe?

I use Joe in my smoothies, oatmeal and just as is. Water Joe Oatmeal is my fav, I love to eat and always need a little pick me up in the morning.

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

Earning a Factory Snocross ride with Arctic Cat.

If you could do anything adventurous right now, what would it be?

Load up my snowmobile, a few Water Joe’s and pound some laps.

Where did you grow up?

Deer River, Minnesota

How did you get into Snocross?

I have raced motocross since I was 4.  I got sick of not being able to race in the winter so I gave snocross a try.

Tell us about your athletic career?Dan Benham

I have been racing for four years.  It all started out of a back of a pick-up truck and now I’ve graduated to a Factory Semi.

What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done?

Once I received a video from a family who were all watching the snocross races at home.  There was a little boy on the video, he was maybe 4 or 5 and he said I was his favorite rider.

What is the first concert you ever went to?

I’ve never been to one.  If I did I would like to go to a Twenty-One Pilots concert.

How did you get into your sport?

My cousin talked about it for years, but finally a few friends convinced me to throw one round and I was horrible. I didn’t think much of it for a few years until I moved to Wisconsin from Tennessee and had too much time on my hands.  Disc Golf came to mind and boooooommm…here I am, 5 years later!

Tell us about your athletic career?

I started in mid-May of 2011, but moved to Africa for a 5 month modeling contract in October of 2011. When I returned in 2012, I entered my first tournament in Nashville TN, an Ice Bowl. I placed 1st in Advanced Women and never looked back. I went on to compete in 27 events during my first year of competition and earned 16 first places. After placing 4th at the 2012 Amateur World Championships in Charlotte, NC, I decided I would go Pro the next year.

I volunteered as a docent for a Blooming Butterflies exhibit in the Olbrich Gardens in Madison, Wisconsin.

I wouldn’t call it crazy by any means, but a fan painted a few pictures of me on Disc Golf discs.  The artwork is amazing, very impressive!

What is the first concert you ever went to?

Billy Ray

IMG_2788 (3) Meet Emery Lehman, US Olympian and #teamjoe athlete.  Mom truly knows best in Emery’s case.  It’s truly fascinating to watch this guy skate – he’s fast!! Read below to see how Emery ‘Joe’s’ and more!

What is your spirit animal?

Well I had to take a test online to figure it out because I never really knew what my spirit animal was, but I guess I am a Tiger.

Tell us about your family?

Currently, I live in Oak Park Illinois where my parents and brother reside. My brother and I both went to Oak Park and River Forest High School, he is a year and a half older than me. Currently, my mom works in Chicago for Hebrew University and my dad works for himself. While I was training for the last Olympics my mom took off from work to drive me to and from Milwaukee to the Pettit Center for practice to help with my athletic adventures. Both of my parents volunteer at the rink on the weekends, my dad referees and my mom works on the timing deck. My brother is a Tennis player at Lehigh University right now, he walked on to the Tennis team which is pretty awesome. We were always very close and pretty competitive with each other, however we did play different sports in high school.

If you could have one magical power, what would it be?

If I could have any power I would have the power of speed so I could run fast anywhere in the world.

What do you want to be when you get big? What future aspirations do you have?IMG_2696 (3)

If I ever make it big I want to help the sport of speed skating grow. It used to be a pretty popular sport, obviously not as popular as any major sports, but over the last ten years or so it has slowly been getting smaller which I don’t like to see. I’m hoping in the future that I can coach some other younger kids to reach an Olympic team and help them out.

Who is an inspirational person in your life right now?

Besides my parents, I am pretty inspired by Shani Davis, I am fortunate enough to train with him occasionally. I always looked up to him when I was younger and he is a really nice and down to earth guy.  He has helped me a lot and shown me the ropes.

There are lots of funny trends currently, what is one that you wish would go away?

I wish the scary clown trend would go away, I am not very frightened of clowns usually but seeing some of these videos of clowns in the middle of corn fields chasing people doesn’t look like much fun.

We all know how important nutrition is, what is one thing in regards to this that you can’t live without?

One piece of unhealthy food I can’t live without is an Italian sausage and Italian beef combo from Johnnies in Elmwood Park, IL. I always used to go there the Friday night before racing when I was living back in Oak Park.

How do you Joe? What is your favorite Water Joe recipe?

I love to put Water Joe in my smoothies!

What accomplishment are you most proud of?

My proudest accomplishment would probably be making my first Olympic team, it was a long and tough road. I know that if I never do anything else in my athletic career at least I checked that accomplishment off the list.

What is your zodiac sign?

Wow I had to google this one too, I am a Gemini.

If you could do anything adventurous right now what would it be?

If I could do anything adventurous right now I would want to take a road trip around the United States. With my tough training schedule (ten and a half months out of the year) it’s hard to do anything spontaneous and on my own. I don’t have any place in particular but I like traveling to new places and I have a sweet Pontiac Aztec, the same kind as Walter White, and we make a good team.

How did you get into your sport?

I got into speed skating because I was always a big hockey player.  So, while I was at a practice at Franklin Park Ice rink, my mom saw a flyer for speed skating and decided to sign me up. I fought her pretty hard on going and especially on wearing a skin suit, but it turned out okay, so I guess my mother knows best.

Tell us about your athletic career?

I made my first junior world team when I was 14, and made five junior world teams total. Over the five years I have stood on the podium seven times, with one first place finish, and six third place finishes. I have made many world cup teams since then and qualified for world championships once. In 2014 I made the Olympic team and placed sixteenth in the 5000m and tenth in the 10000m and was the top American finisher in both.

IMG_2792 (3)Are you involved in the community? What do you do?

While I was living in Oak Park, I volunteer at the food pantry and coached the Franklin Park club. When in West Allis I helping out with the West Allis speed skating club, I really enjoy working with the kids there. I also do motivational speaking at elementary and middle schools, wherever there are kids to listen.

What has been your favorite volunteer job?

My favorite volunteer job so far I have to say is coaching speed skating because I enjoy the sport a lot and like passing on my knowledge of the sport and like how rewarding it is watching others succeed and get faster.

What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done for you?

After the Olympics I had a girl make a video on YouTube asking me to prom, unfortunately I couldn’t make it but it was a well thought out video.

What is your spirit animal?

A Horse

Tell us about your family?

3-brothers, 2 are half.  2-sisters, 1 is half and 1 is an identical twin. 2-amazing parents, an awesome fiancé and a  2 ½ year old boy

What future aspirations do you have?

I would love to do a few more Ironman races and MANY marathons.   I also have dreams of someday opening a Doberman rescue center.

Who is an inspirational person in your life right now?

Sara Hall. I feel like I grew up with Sara since she went to one of our rival high schools.  I was lucky enough to race with her for a year before I graduated.  Following her career since then has been so inspirational.  She recently stepped up to marathon distance, which means I see her even more!Half Marathon win

We all know how important nutrition is, what is one thing in regards to this that you can’t live without?

Fruit!  I eat tons of it.

How do you Joe?

Sometimes you need a little pick me up.  I love that I can get this without all the extras…sugar, artificial sweeteners, you know…

If you could do anything adventurous right now what would it be?

Swim across the bay to Alcatraz…again.  I have only done it once and had a very rough start.  I need a redemption swim.  Despite the rough start, I truly loved the overall experience.

Where did you grow up?

Guerneville, CA

How did you get into your sport?

My twin sister and I grew up playing soccer, so it was a no-brainer that we would try out for the high school team.  When we went to try-outs, our 85lb frames didn’t even come close to measuring up to the other girls.  By day three, the coach cut us both for being “too small” and, in doing so, probably spared us some serious potential injuries.  Later that same day, my mom called the cross country coach to see if there was still time for me to run for them instead.   I walked on as the #1 girl and it stayed that way till I graduated.  My sister went on to play tennis instead.  After high school, I received a scholarship to run for Chico State.

_05Q1970smallWhat has been your favorite volunteer job?

Sonoma County Animal Shelter where I used to walk/exercise dogs.

What is the craziest thing a fan has ever done?

A fan during a half marathon in San Diego, asked me out on a date mid-race.

What is your spirit animal?

Easy, Wolf

Tell us about your family?

I spent most of my childhood in the foster care system with two of my other brothers. We were all three adopted in middle school. My adopted parents had two biological children of their own. My family is pretty big, which always makes for entertaining family gatherings!

What do you want to be when you get big? What future aspirations do you have?

I want to be an example to young athletes. I know I have a good amount of young followers now, but I want to be able to be an example that kids can look up to and know that they can do anything that they work towards.

Who is an inspirational person in your life right now?

Most who know me would expect for me to say Kobe Bryant, but right now, I would have to say Damian Lillard. I love his competitive edge and mentality. He has been overlooked in a bunch of ways in the league and is constantly carrying a chip on his shoulder when he competes; and I feel like I approach my play in the same way.

There are lots of funny trends currently, what is one that you wish would go away?

Dabbing, cannot stand it! IMG_3110 (3)

We all know how important nutrition is, what is one thing in regards to this that you can’t live without?

Cheese, I put cheese on everything.

How do you Joe? What is your favorite Water Joe recipe?

My favorite way to Joe is before a workout. Gives me the hydration I need and a kick of energy to maximize my efforts.

What ‘on the field’ an ‘off the field’ accomplishment are you most proud of?

On the field: The first moment I played in a professional game. It was a realization that I achieved one of my biggest life goals.

Off the field: Everything I have accomplished to get to this point despite my childhood-two bachelor degrees, div 1 collegiate athlete, professional athlete, and successful business owner.

How did you get into Ultimate Frisbee?

I started really getting into it after college ended because it gave me an opportunity to compete at a very high level post college athletics.

Tell us about your athletic career?

Grew up playing just about every sport, but focused on track in college at Morehead State University. After getting engaged, moved out to Colorado where I really started getting serious about ultimate. I then moved back to Cincinnati in 2013 to sign with the Cincinnati Revolution in the AUDL.

IMG_3040 (3)Are you involved in the community? What do you do?

I spent years working and serving low income families involved in the child welfare system. Over the past few years have volunteered running countless clinics for youth from middle school to high school as well as volunteered coaching for a couple of different high school teams.

Meet #teamjoe athlete, Joanna Lohman!

Water-Joe - webJoanna Lohman exemplifies awesome both on and off the field.  She is a 13 year veteran of the Washington Spirit, a women’s professional soccer team.   You can also find her training future soccer stars, speaking professionally and traveling the world as a as a Sport Diplomat, running programs in less developed nations that promote gender equality, conflict resolution, cultural understanding, and economic development.  We were fortunate to be able to ask Joanna a few questions about herself, read on to get to know her better. #waterjoejo

What is a funny story about you off the field?

Recently, my Grandmother turned 95 and we had a big birthday party for her. This meant all five of my nieces and nephews were in attendance. They range from ages 3-7. To envision my relationship with them is to envision Peter Pan and the Lost Kids. I am basically one of the kids and we adore spending time together. They will literally do anything I tell them.

Well, on Grandma’s 95th birthday, I was so excited to see them. I was inside when I spotted them for the first time out on the playground. Like a child on Christmas running towards the presents, I sprinted outside towards the playground. In no way was I going to prolong the reunion by entering through the proper door. I was on a bee line towards them which meant climbing a fence, so, I attempted to launch myself over this fence. In the process, my jeans got stuck on the wiring and to prevent a complete face plant, my jeans ripped in two places giving me what looked like Wolverine slashes on my upper thigh.

Keep in my mind, this was the start of the party so for all the pictures, games, and celebrations, I would be baring some skin. I wore it like a badge of honor. I am a wild child and it was very fitting this happened in the manner it did. To this day, I still refuse to buy new black jeans and every time I put them on, I grin from ear to ear.

What is your Spirit Animal?

Black Panther

Tell us about your family?

I have one older sister and one older brother. My sister has two kids and is one of eight Associate Deans at Yale’s school of Executive Management. My brother has three kids and is a Foreign Service Officer for the Department of State. My parents are awesome and raised us to believe we could do anything we set our minds to.

Water-Joe78 - webIf you could have one magical power what would it be?

I would like to be able to transport myself to places by just thinking about them. Close my eyes, concentrate very hard and BOOM….I’m there.

What do you want to be when you grow up?

An inspirational speaker based around “Find Your Cool”. My website will tell you all you need to know about it: joannalohman.com

What foods can you not live without?

Chicken wings and ribs. I am basically a cave man.

How do you Joe?

I drink Water Joe when I need a jolt of energy, usually in the late afternoon when I need an extra push to be productive. I drink it straight from that bottle!

What is your greatest achievement?

My greatest achievement is building my thirteen year professional career. It is extremely difficult to have a career in women’s soccer that spans such a long period. It means I have been able to stay healthy (by taking care of my body), consistently contributed to each team I played for, helped to grow the game globally, have value in the women’s sports arena, and demonstrated resourcefulness to secure supplemental income that allowed my career to continue.

How did you get into your sport?

I have loved football since the age of six. I played on an all-boys team coached by my best friend’s mother. It started as a way for me to release my unrelenting energy and spend time with my friends. It grew into my vocation – my life calling.

Water-Joe1 - webAre you involved in the community?

I work in Sports Diplomacy where I travel overseas as an envoy for the Department of State. That is the main reason I am in Africa. Check out this link for all the details of the programs I ran in Gaborone and Maun: http://washingtonspirit.com/pro/update-on-joanna-lohmans-african-adventure/

This has been my favorite volunteer job because I possess the overall desire to give back through the sport. I have been so lucky to do what I love for as long as I have. I know how the game has the power to change the world. It has changed my life. I want to be a part of the growth of the game especially to those who do not have the same opportunities I do as a American female athlete. Soccer can be used to empower young women around the world and when you empower a young women, you empower an entire community.

At Water Joe we’re good at what we do: producing water with a boost of caffeine. It’s simple: Water Joe isn’t full of all of the stuff you don’t need—like chemicals, sugars and additives—it’s simply water for pure hydration and caffeine for energy. Studies show that ingesting caffeine before a workout can improve endurance and performance. Which brings us to #teamjoe.

Kind of like your trusty bottle of Water Joe. Our crew includes a pro soccer player, marathoner, disc golfer and Olympic speed skater among others—and we want you to get to know them a little better. We’ll introduce them to you and tap into what makes them tick, what drives them and what makes them better.

#teamjoe

So get ready to meet #teamjoe soon as we roll out profiles on some of the coolest athletes across the U.S. And guess what? They all drink Water Joe to fuel their bodies and minds for competition. Even if your workday doesn’t include physical milestones like our #teamjoe athletes, we know that making each day your best is your goal. And that’s what we’re here for.
